Shallee McArthur's debut novel, The Unhappening of Genesis Lee is a phenomenal book. Well written, fast-paced, intriguing characters, but best of all, a smart world view.

The Unhappening of Genesis LeeIn this near-future society, a group of people with genetically modified memories (the Mementi) have formed their own colony, which is slowly being infiltrated by regular people (Populace). Genesis Lee is Mementi, and stories all of her memories in beads. She's pretty content with her life, hanging out with friends and practicing her dance, until her best friend's memories are stolen by the Link thief who is terrorizing the Mementi population. When Gena runs into a cute Populace boy who claims to know her, but who she doesn't remember, things get serious. Because Gena has never forgotten anything. Ever. But to stop the thief, she's going to need his help.

I thought the book had a nice balance of Gena's own internal conflicts with forgetting and the external tension rising between the Mementi and Populace. The story had some cool twists, but my favorite parts were the relationships. I liked how things were complicated: her relationship with Kalan and other Populace, her relationship with her best friend (who's forgotten the last two years of their relationship), and with her family. And I was so impressed with how smart the book was--I've done some research in memory studies (mostly in terms of collective memory, rather than physiological memory), and it was clear to me that McArthur knows her stuff.

A great read for fans of light sci-fi.

This book was such a gift... But first, let me say for the skeptical, you don't need to be a huge scif-fi fan to enjoy this one. If you loved The Giver (and, come on, who didn't?), then you'll love Genesis Lee.

This wasn't my first time at the YA dystopian rodeo, so when I opened The Unhappening of Genesis Lee, I thought I knew what I was in for--a fun, but mostly predictable, plot-driven story, where a pleasant young hero goes up against the corrupt powers that be. Such a great surprise when I found something much juicier! Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, it took a turn I hadn't seen coming. The characters were layered, complex, real people, with complicated relationships. (My favorite was Ren, the main character's sister. I feel like we'd be best friends.)) It was a really fun read, like I expected, but also hit me on a more emotional level than I would have predicted.

I enjoyed Genesis Lee so much, that I wanted to share it with my students. I teach 6-8th grade ESL (English as a Second Language), and most of my students would never describe themselves as readers, going to great lengths to avoid reading. I knew the reading level would be a stretch for a lot of them, but I was convinced that with some support from the audiobook and lots of class discussion, they'd get sucked into this book...

I've never been more right. )

My kids LOVE Genesis Lee. Between my classes, I had about 80 students reading this book, and with their huge range of different backgrounds, interests, personalities, and abilities, they all fell in love with Genesis Lee from the very first chapter, and stayed hooked through to the end. Every day they'd come in eager for the next chapter, loved me on days when I let them read two chapters, and hated me when I'd cut them off. ) They were talking about the book outside of class, so students from other classes were coming to me and asking if they could borrow a copy. Eventually, my prompting became unnecessary, because they were making predictions, connections, debating theories and opinions with other, collecting quotes they loved... all on their own. We were racing the clock to finish before the school year ended, and typically the kids' brains go on vacation long before their bodies are allowed to. But this year, wow, I've never seen kids so engaged all the way through June. It was a teacher's dream!

I loved reading Genesis Lee on my own. But I can't tell you how much I loved watching my students fall in love with a book, naturally engage in higher level thinking, and come together as a stronger classroom community that went on this emotional, literary journey together. It was magical. It meant so much. Thanks, Shallee McArthur. )
I'm not typically a sci-fi fantasy reader but this one was a great read to dabble in that genre! It really makes you think deeper and defeinately keeps you on your toes! I thought in a few places that I knew what was going to happen to only be taken down a different road! Amazing read, great fluidity, and an amazing twist on the world! AND the little romance inside the story was definitely a great happening inside the twisted tale-loved the characters!

My all time favorite line "if you couldn't remember that you'd forgotten, how would you know how how horrible it was to forget?"
WOW! What a fun roller coaster ride of mystery, action, intrigue, and surprises! I loved that The Unhappening of Genesis Lee was told in the first person. Sometimes I got so wrapped up in it that I felt like I was right there with Gena. I loved her character arc. She grew so much and learned a lot about herself. She was such a complex character. At first it didn't make sense to me that a Mementi that retains all of their memories should have panic attacks. The revelation of why she had those feelings was one of my favorite parts of the story. I love Gena.

Kalan was another intriguing character. A Populace boy who was trying to help Gena, but she kept forgetting him! She wasn't always sure she could trust him. I would have liked to know Kalan better, but I saw him only through Gena's perspective so it made sense that I couldn't know more. Never the less, he was my second favorite character.

The parts of the story that dealt with memory and how it shapes our character traits, perceptions, and prejudices were so deep and insightful. Seeing Mementi who had their memories stolen brought tears to my eyes because of my own mother's Alzheimer's disease. It was even more poignant when I discovered that they retained the emotions connected to those lost memories. Ms McArthur was so sensitive when dealing with such personal tragedy and anguish.

This is definitely one of the best debut novels I've ever read and I would recommend it to readers of all ages! Bravo Ms McArthur!
