Sort of a Peter Matthiesen wildlife novel for feminists.

There is much to like about this first novel in a series. The 'detective', Anna Pigeon, is interesting and unusual. The setting of the case, Guadalupe Mountains, is interesting and unusual. Barr can write. The social encounters between Pigeon and the rest of humanity are mostly plausible and interesting. Her self-observations in the process of her amateurish investigations help raise the book above most of the mystery genre.

What comes in the way of a wholehearted five star 'yay' is the fact that the whodunnit genre forces an artificial structure on the book. One should stop reading these novels after 2/3 of the text. Who did it is usually the least interesting question. Barr is not particularly good at tying the loose ends and keeping suspense up during the process. She compensates by an ample supply of gore and blood.

A mountain lion is wrongly accused of murder in a Southwestern national park, and Anna Pigeon is a park ranger who sets out to prove who really did it. Great scenery and nature writing - very little humor (except for some banter with her Manhattan-dwelling sister). No more violence than is necessary to carry the story (but graphic descriptions of what wild creatures do to dead bodies in the wilderness). The best suspense scene involves Pigeon alone in a fall down a mountain slope to the edge of a precipice. Mild sex (M-F and F-F). There is political agenda ( females and tree-huggers are good guys, ranchers and hunters are bad guys, Christians are silly) but I didn't find it too intrusive. The final showdown action scene with the murderer was unconvincing, but these scenes almost always are.
The writing kept me going but it really wasn't my favorite. I have read some of her other books and liked them better.
This is the first Anna Pigeon Park Ranger book. It is takes place in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas.
I have been to many National parks and that is why I was interested in this series. Took me a while to get into the story but then it became a book I didn’t want to put down.
I enjoyed this book. It is the first book of the Anna Pigeon books. We enjoy visiting National Parks and a friend suggested this author, Nevada Barr, since all the Anna Pigeon books take place in National Parks. You learn a bit about the park and enjoy a murder mystery at the same time. I finished the book in one day.
Because I live in the South West and have been to the Guadalupe mountains, I enjoyed the descriptions of scenery, plants, and animals. I also learned some new things about lizards and plants that we do not have in my area. In addition, Barr writes very well with a minimum of grammatical errors (and I have high standards).
This is the first in the Anna Pigeon mystery series. A quick but great read. All the elements you look for in a mystery appealing and well fleshed out characters, interesting but not distracting back stories, good pacing, clues galore (most of which you'll get after the fact if you're like me), and an ending you can't see coming (at least I couldn't). I ordered the second book in the series in hopes it will prove as entertaining as this one.

P.S. As you might gather from the online reviews of Nevada Barr, if you checked them out, this series is not for born-again Christians. I have no idea what Nevada Barr's personal spiritual beliefs may be, but her character, Anna Pigeon, does not believe in god and makes no bones about it. So if you're a believer, and sensitive to those who don't, it's best to steer clear as you won't appreciate some passages in the book. Be forewarned, don't buy the book, and please don't smear the book in reviews simply because you object to the character's belief system. It's a novel, not a religious text.
