This book is not designed, in the 21st Century, to be an accurate depiction of women, housewives, or any aspect of American family life today. The publisher today does not claim that it represents women, housewives, or American family life when it was first printed almost a hundred years ago. It is a unique look at a time, and at a perspective. In order to see how the world has changed (most would say “progressed”, some would say “digressed.”) we have to understand how people looked at different aspects of society those many decades ago. Some of the ideas may seems strange, but when you consider that there are people alive today who lived in these times, and almost everyone knows – or knew – someone from this era, we are not as far removed from it as sometimes we like to think. Chapter   I Introductory II The Nature Of "Nervousness" III Types Of Housewife Predisposed To Nervousness IV The Housework And The Home As Factors In The Neurosis V Reaction To The Disagreeable VI Poverty And Its Psychical Results VII The Housewife And Her Husband VIII The Housewife And Her Household Conflicts IX The Symptoms As Weapons Against The Husband X Histories Of Some Severe Cases XI Other Typical Cases XII Treatment Of The Individual Cases XIII The Future Of Woman, The Home, And Marriage

I checked this book out for research on hysteria and its evolution through history and culture. I had the highest skepticism for Myerson's writing initially because he uses terms that in today's world have quite a different set of connotations (i.e. referring to humanity as a "race").

This book was written in 1920 during a time of transition from Victorian values to the modern world we see today. Myerson makes note of this without bias towards tradition nor towards progress. He acknowledges the good along with the bad. While he admits the difficult position the housewife is cast into, he does not wholly excuse her of her own contributions to the problem.

Never before have I read a book that can look at society and not claim an alliance to one principle or another. Because he doesn't do this he illustrates with timeless clarity how society has changed, how women cannot exist as housewives because the role of women has evolved due to industrialization. He shows how women are raised to idealize vanity and yearn for their "prince" and how these cause a degree of conflict as they realize they deserve more equality while at the same time valuing aspects that are part of their own degradation. Because of this balanced viewpoint, he predicts with eery accuracy how women of today will change, and even now his writings are applicable to today's issues.

But be warned: read this book with the same objectivity. He is not flawless and some of his statements are clearly a product of his culture; it is clear to see when this happens because the clarity of his explanations becomes much more cryptic.
